GIRLS LIKE THEM
by Evan Placey | German by Frank Weigand
In the middle of history class, when the teacher is talking about women's suffrage and most of the students are slowly dozing off, the classroom gets brighter, cell phones flash, buzz and beep, everyone's eyes wander to their smartphones: a nude photo is shown, a photo of classmate Scarlett. It is forwarded and shared, the news spreads like wildfire and within a few seconds the whole school is in the know. Instead of talking to Scarlett, more assumptions and rumors about her are quickly spread. It doesn't take long before a second photo is sent out to all the students: another nude photo, but this time it shows a boy: the ever-popular Russell. Russell is not about to go through the ordeal that Scarlett has been through. Because Russell is a boy and that is different.
Evan Placey describes in direct and honest words how cruel children and young people can become when they form a group and find a common victim.
